04/02/07 Told ya.
From Serebii's announcement:
Ok guys, I figured you may as well know the truth now
The news I posted yesterday was part of an April Fools, just not the one you all thought.
The news is all 100% real. I would never reveal fake news as a joke. I take pride in the fact that I never post false information. I consider your readership and consistent loyalty to be based upon trust that our information is accurate. It isn't fair to create false information that could potentially upset & anger people.
That said, I did plan the day very well, I wanted to see the reaction of the community to something like this, and the results were perfect. it goes to show that if people like the stuff they're all "yeah, this must be real", but once they find stuff they don't like they just go on saying they're fake. It's pretty sad actually.
So yeah, that was the main April Fools joke...it was a joke upon the people who thought and insisted they were fake.
Hope you had a good one
So yes, those are the real names. Even though there is now a second Glacierbadge and some rather silly names (I have to say that "X-Scissor" sounds much more forced than "Scissor Cross", and "U-Turn" makes it sound like the Pokémon is a car or something o.O).
EDIT: Hell, I'll comment on some of the other attack names.
- The attack Coronis translated as "Prayer" has been named Lucky Chant. Attempt to keep religion out of Pokémon, anyone? This raises some suspicion that they might mess around with Arceus...
- Magnet Rise for what we have come to know as "Electrolevitate" undeniably sounds sort of silly in comparison to the previous translation's scientific sound. Hehe.
- I really like Rock Polish more than the previous translation's "Rock Cart". It's a Rock-type move that raises Speed; while "Rock Cart" clumsily brings up images of a cart being conjured out of nowhere and the Pokémon jumping into it, "Rock Polish" makes sense as in the Pokémon would somehow "polish itself" and thus become smoother-surfaced and able to roll more easily. Something like that.
- I kind of like Night Slash for what Coronis called "Blade Test", too. Sounds more sensibly Dark-typed, and brings up images of Scyther more easily. :D
- Dragon Rush for Dragon Dive makes me think of Shadow Rush. o.o But it is sensible, considering I'm fairly sure for example Bagon can learn it, and Bagon can't exactly "dive" on anything since it can't fly. Kind of similar to how "Beak Slash" became Aerial Ace, which made a lot more sense than just leaving in that insistence on Pokémon like Absol and Scyther having a beak.
- For some weird reason I really like Switcheroo for the attack Sneak. o_O
- Giga Impact sounds much better than the extraordinarily lame "Giga Attack". Whoo.
- I have to say I kind of preferred Scheme to Nasty Plot, though.
- But then again I like Ice Shard more than the weak-sounding "Ice Pebble".
- Zen Headbutt... heehee.
- Surprise, surprise! What we've known as "Meteoric Swarm" since it was revealed as the first D/P attack to be released is not keeping its name (which would have been too long, anyhow): it's now Draco Meteor. More of a type relation. I can't say it has the same ring to it, but perhaps I'm just too used to Meteoric Swarm.
- I think Lava Plume sounds considerably better than "Smoke Erupt".
- Rock Wrecker... I'm kind of torn. On one hand, it doesn't really make as much sense for the side-effect (it's a Rock-type Hyper Beam) as "Rock Cannon", but on the other it does sound powerful and Rock Cannon might bring up images of Spike Cannon.
- Gunk Shot is more type-related than "Dust Shoot", too.
- I like Captivate for some random reason.
- I don't really think Grass Knot makes as much sense as "Grass Rope" for its effect (being stronger on heavier Pokémon), but maybe seeing a relation between that and Grass Rope is kinda far-fetched too.
- Judgment sounds much more powerful than that spectacularly anticlimatic "Judgement Pebble", but God, I hate that spelling of the word. << Why couldn't it have been Judgement?
- Bug Bite doesn't sound quite as powerful as "Bug Devour", but I like it anyway.
- Can't say that Heal Order has quite the same ring to it as "Restore Command", but meh.
- Roar Of Time sounds kind of cooler than "Time Roar", but... dear God, I hope that's not the official capitalization, because that Of is bugging the hell out of me. Roar of Time, thank you very much.
- Spacial Rend sounds quite a bit more like a legendary's super-powerful signature move than "Space Break", so I'm very happy with that although I will admit I had to look up the word "Rend" on Dictionary.com before having any clue what it was supposed to mean. Dunno, maybe "Spacial Rift" would have sounded better and been easier to understand? Or maybe my vocabulary is just small?
I don't think they're as bad as people seem to be whining about, really. I mean, there are a couple of awkward ones, but many more that sound distinctly less so than Coronis's translations. :/ Also, I don't even remember anymore what attacks people were whining about when Ruby and Sapphire were translated (aside from Aerial Ace), so I really wouldn't worry too much about people resenting the names.

HOLY FUDGESICLES! o:
Night Slash owns =9
Heal Order is better than "Restore Command"... we have Pokemon, not tactics battles! XD
I'm a spelling nerd, so I scream "AHHHHHH!" at "Spacial Rend".
...wait, that was Palkia's move. Space, ah, durr. I thought they missed an "e". P:
I'm going crazy at "Judgment" though. THEY MISSED AN E! GRRR! *gonna bug me a bunnch once I get Arceus*
No, no, no, no. Don't mess with Arceus. That's for sure gonna mess up my mind. *grr* Ah well.. *sighs* Zen Headbutt = lol. Did that used to be "Reminescent Headbutt" or whatever? XD
Tina
Oh, and the Icey badge thing is Glacia Badge, and Pryce's badge is the Glacier Badge. I guess because the Ice gym leader (Candice) is female, they made the badge girly as well. Ah well.
Butterfree (Website)
"Judgment", as far as I know, is the correct American spelling. Firefox's US English spellchecker is underlining "judgement" in red and suggesting I meant "judgment". However, I hate that spelling every bit as much as you do.
According to Serebii, the Japaense name of that badge was the Glaciabadge, but the English name is Glacierbadge just like Pryce's.
Iveechan
The only thing that REALLY bugs me is the Glacier badge name repitition. There's tons of other icey names they coulda used... Tundra, Arctic, Blizzard (even though it's an attack, "Blizzard Badge sounds funny-cool to me), or even a lame Snow badge. Ah well. I rarely think about badge names anyhow.
Nasty Plot is just so funny and full of innuendo I love it. U-turn is dumb but it makes sense. Somersault doesn't bring to mind someone rolling and then rolling back. Other english attacks I'm nuetral to. Time Of Roar bugs me slightly because it's 3 words but I don't train legends so whatever. Overall I think the majority of the english names are satisfactory.
PichuPi
Actually, I'm pretty content with the latest names. It's only "Nasty Plot" I have an issue with... it'll make it sound like my poor Pichu is thinking of picking his nose. =\ Oh well.
I think that Bug Bite is more suiting. I don't want those Pokémon eating my team. It just seems wrong. O_O
And lawl at the double-negative April Fool's joke. =P
SS
Lucky Chant - Makes me think of a load of Pokemon watching the battle shouting "Arceus! Arceus!" or something like that.
Zen Headbutt - When I read that I thought it said Zidane Headbutt and I rofl-ed.
Switcheroo - YAY! TEH CRAZINESS!
Judgment - Hopefully the PAL version will have Judgement. If it doesn't, I will have to hurt someone.
U-Turn - "Whoops! Time to make a U-Turn!" Super happy fun time bonus points for spotting the reference!
Glacierbadge - Repeat of name make SS mad.
Draco Meteor - That makes me think of Draco Malfoy sitting on a big meteor trying to strike down a Pokemon. o_O
Ice Shard - That is just so much improved over Ice Pebble.
Night Slash - Does that happen in an alleyway or something? I'm scared.
PichuPi
@SS: Does SS stand for... SNOWBALL SUNDAY?!
Wake-up Slap sounds like you could use it in your double battle Rest-Blissey strategy. =\
foxsundance
Switcheroo- What?
Giga Impact- That sounds AWESOME.
Draco Meteor- Good, but makes me think of Harry Potter.
Judgment- Yeah, it's better than Judgement Pebble. It makes me think of Arceus throwing a pebble and launching the enemy hundreds of miles into the air...but like you guys, I want the Judgement spelling, and I'm American, so....
Roar of Time- sounds like a Fantasy book. o_O
Spacial Rend- sounds good, but I was getting used to Space Break.
SS
SS stands for Shadow Scyther.
Wake-Up Slap just sounds hilariously catfighty. If catfighty is a word.
KorwatisRicky
No, "judgment" and "judgement" are both acceptable in U.S. English if I remember correctly, but most people drop the "e" in U.S. English. (Something I hate, BTW.)
Roar Of Time makes me wish I pre-ordered Pearl instead. But I love Dialga, so I must sacrifice. D:
Glacierbadge reminds me of Rollout Lickitung. The only difference is that once of those mistakes could've been evaded easier than the other. And I LOLed at U-turn. :P
And I hope the anime uses Switcheroo at least once in the anime. That'll be fun to see. Well, hear. :D
SS
When I played Sonic and the Secret Rings, it was spelled Judgment and I thought it was a spelling error... just please, Nintendo, add the E for the PAL version!
Mudskipper
"Judgment" is the correct English spelling of the word. As incorrect as it looks, everywhere I see it, it is listed as "judgment."
umbritty
X-Scissor? Hmm...Make way for the Scissor Crossing!!
Shadowater
<.< FUCK! Judgment looks so weird!
I like alot of the names, but Judgment instead of Judgement... GOD!
Crystylla (Website)
Okay, I think I'm getting used to these name revelations now. The only things that really bug me are the second Glacierbadge and the "Judgment" attack.
People hoping that they'll add the "e" into "Judgment" for the PAL version: I wouldn't hold your breath if I were you. They've never changed US spellings before as far as I know. =/
On a completely random note, I am very surprised that Butterfree didn't know the word "rend." o.O x3
Officer Jordan (Website)
Heh, it's all cool with me. The only problem I have is "Glacier Badge". Who agrees that Snowflake Badge would be so much better?
Butterfree (Website)
My vocabulary is a lot more limited than it seems. You'd be surprised by how often I needed to say "thingy" when Fluffy was in Iceland.
Patch
Giga Impact reminds me of "Deep Impact" for some weird reason...
SS
Glacierbadge will forever haunt me. Especially if a Gold/Silver remake comes out.
Malachite Treecko
Blade Test sounded much cooler than Night Slash, though Night Slash makes more Dark-sense (though it's called Evil in Japanese and all that).
The same with Bug Devour; the Japanese name was cooler but didn't make as much sense... Additionally, the word "devour" makes me think of leeches and manatees because of ASoUE...
Bug Upheavel > Bug Buzz everyday.
Avalanche is much better than Snow Slide :)
SS
What's ASoUE?
Oh, and I'm getting used to Glacierbadge now. |_|
Tina
Ummm.. kinda off topic here but this is worth shouting -
GOLD AND SILVER CARTS ARE DYYYYYYYYING T-T
...yeah. it makes me sad. they try to kill themselves before D/P comes out..
Malachite Treecko
ASoUE = A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Glacier Badge was really bad. Tundra, Icicle, Arctic, Polar, Avalanche, Iceberg... but they need to use Glacier again... Stupid.
SS
So how does devour make you think of leeches nd manatees because of ASoUE? (But don't spoil it for me, I've just finished Ersatz Elavator).
Tundra Badge. AWESOME. How long will it be until the 5th Generation?
KorwatisRicky
For the Glacierbadge thing, maybe Serebii made a mistake. :O
Actually, if he did make a mistake, I think someone would've said something by now. But still. Let's hope. 8D
Butterfree (Website)
Who would be able to say anything? :/ Serebii is the only source we have for the names. Nobody can correct him.
Tina
Maybe because Nintendo decided "Hey, G/S/C's save batteries are dying soon after D/P comes out! How about another Glacier Badge?"
...yeah. :) But they HAVE to make a remake now that G/S/C save batteries are dead, so screw that idea...
(I'm quite lucky that my Crystal still doesn't feel like killing itself .__.)
Officer Jordan (Website)
Hmm... Bulbapedia reports that the name of the badge is actually the Glacial Badge. Still, that's a wiki, so we can't trust it. I guess we should just wait until it actually comes out to find out.
Tina
(after all, it's only a few days away. although don't count on me, because I like to enjoy my gameplay... but no one counts on me, so techincally this is just umm.. spamming ;_;)
Poketoa
Yes, they are forced into a remake of GSC... I hope Serebii's "New Game" is a remake... and not just the Dungeon 2 or Battrio... A GSC remake...
SS
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Good point, Coro Coro's come out now, hasn't it?
pika7
tina is my character but you
can use her name and yeah my silver loves killing any game i try to make and gear works is broken my hamtaro ham hams unite will randomly kill my game save and only one game has lived on my yellow but then again i think i now why it killed those games 1=buttens for delete 2=mew cheat and go to http://www.psypokes.com/dex
they how most of the english names and the secound fan site i visted
Paperfairy
Well yes, Vespiquen and Porygon-Z are correct, and it's now the Icicle Badge.
Red scyther
Draco Meteor-Makes me think of Rayquazza stopping the meteor in Mystery Dungeon.
Lucky Chant-Overly happy chanting Chancies.
Magnet Rise-More accurate, less cool, less sci-fi.
Roar of Time-Makes me think of sauropods and roaring tyranosaurs. Is Dialga a sauropod.
X-Scissors-Fine. Doesn't sound powerful or even damaging though.
U-turn- Enough with the hyphenated bug attacks already!!! Somersault was better.
Special Rend-Wheeeeeeeeee! Sounds EXACTLY how I theorized it.
Judgment-Makes Arcues sound like God. Arceus = E-V-I-L!!!
Bug Bite-Already feeling itchy. *scratches self*
Ashlover
It's Icicle badge... The translation was really off. I know this because I'm reading the insruction book as I speak(er, type...XD).
Soluna
Judgment is going to drive me mad. I am a spelling fanatic who aces spelling tests without studying. I am scared.
J.T.
Why does everyone find it a big deal to not have the E in Judgment? >_<
Zen headbutt makes much more sense that Reminiscent Headbutt. Reminiscent Headbutt made me think of some old guy slamming into someone. o.O
Bug Bite is much better, Roar of Time isn't much different from Time Roar, U-turn makes me think of a car or bike, and Judgment sounds much better than Judgement Pebble.
And it's not called the Glacier Badge, for crying out loud! It's the Icicle Badge! >.>
Officer Jordan (Website)
It doesn't really look like an icicle, though =/
Wierdmin
Meh.
I liked "Attack Command" better than "Attack Order."
It sounded much more powerful. Oh well. ><
Wierdmin
Bug Devour just sounds gory.
Bug Bite is much more friendly. U-Turn i liked. I think of a Megayanma turning around with a sad/mad face... :/.
Officer Jordan (Website)
The old name of Rock Polish, Rock Cart, brings to mind a Pokemon pushing a wheelbarrow full of rocks down a hill. o.O
Fushi Gisou
Hm... I think "Iceberg Badge" would've worked better. Since, well... The badge itself looks like an iceberg.
One move that bugs me is "Defend Order"... It sounds like the random bees are defending the peace or something. (During a battle?) I didn't get it until Aaron's Vespiquen used "Attack Order".
I've never heard of "Heal Order", though.
(If this topic was dead, I'm sorry! ;-; )
UncleOfSwablu88
If there's a 5th generation, how would they get Magnezone, Glaceon, Leafeon etc. that need area-based evolutions? will game frek make a g/s/c type 2(or more)-region game
Eevee
TRUST WIKIS!
Scepterra
U-turn is just way too weird, Roar of Time is too long, and it's ICICLE BADGE, already!
PurrKat (Website)
Wait, what? Judgment IS the proper spelling? That's just weird. >.o; And here I always thought it was judgement...
Anyways, old news, but it's still fun to poke fun at the names. ;D
PurrKat
Meh, sorry to double post, but...
To Fushi Gisou, "Heal Order" is a real move. I saw Aaron's Vespiquen use it once, it looks a lot like the other two orders, and heals about as much HP as Synthesis. ....and that's it. xD
Swellow (Website)
Thundershock is now officially "ThunderShock"...
LOL CAPITALIZATION
Jirachi
For the G/S/C save battery thing: My Silver Version won't save more than twice before it deletes the game,But I am glad my Crystal doesn't wanna commit suicide like my Silver does every time I save for a second time(I luuuuuv my Crystal version!)Funny, though, I thought I was the only one with this problem....I'm not alone,YAY!
Jirachi
U-Turn: Makes me think of one of those U-Turn signs, and a car driving by the sign getting bombarded with oncoming Pokemon
Draco Meteor:PWNage!I taught my Rayquaza and Dragonite that,it's sooooo beautiful......and destructive! However, what ticks me off is that even though the animation shows meteors raining down over the two enemy pokemon(in the case of a double battle,of course)it only hits one pokemon!
Jirachi
Sorry for this 3rd post, but, I noticed that the only game that I could never beat the Elite 4 in was G/S/C,which was the only one with only 4 people, and it was the only one that you could visit a prev region in.If they make a 5th Gen game,I betcha if there are only 4 people(in the E4)and you can visit other regions,I will NEVER be able to beat it!At least not without my lv.100s,Which they better let you trade them from other versions!!!I will have a conniption if they don't!
Nyaasu
Magnet Rise- sounds like my science class.
Judg(e)ment-I HATE THE SPELLING! But, what the heck is a "judgment pebble" anyway? It makes no sense!
Also, what's so bad about Arceus? Is it something religious? I'm not religious.
Nyaasu
Oh' I forgot U-Turn and Rock Polish. Rock Cart makes me think of Shopright. I can just imagine a Pokemon pushing a grocery (rock) cart, losing control, and making a U-turn (that happened to me once).
RayquazasYellowOrb
Hmm, Attack Command sounds more powerful than Attack Order, and U-turn's just silly. The spelling of Judgment bothers me too, but then again, I still think it's spelt "Iron Defence".
shadow_lugia
Quote:
Roar of Time, thank you very much.
:oo They listened to you, for once! *throws party*
pinkmew
Sorry if this is dead, but, JUDGEMENT PLEASE! E is GOOD.
cloudykitty
U-Turn XD
On the other hand, I'm used to Judgment, and in my school if I spell it Judgement the teacher marks it wrong, and Firefox marks it wrong too.
