Breaking Bad
Here you will find my detailed episode commentaries on AMC's beloved 2008-2013 television series, Breaking Bad. (Please be warned that the the show gets pretty intense and includes strong language at times, as do my commentaries!)
Season 1
Episode 1: Pilot
Commentary on the pilot, in which we meet Walter White, a fifty-year-old chemistry teacher, as he is diagnosed with lung cancer and decides to start cooking crystal meth with his former student Jesse Pinkman.
Episode 2: Cat's in the Bag...
Commentary on episode two, in which Walt and Jesse set out to destroy the evidence, forget all this ever happened and never see each other again, only for things to be a lot more complicated than that as the show gets a lot darker and a lot funnier.
Episode 3: ...and the Bag's in the River
Commentary on episode three, in which Walt grapples with murdering a guy in cold blood while Hank and Marie have a comic misunderstanding about Walt Jr. smoking pot. (This show is extremely consistent in tone.)
Episdoe 4: Cancer Man
Commentary on episode four, in which we start to explore Jesse’s character and what makes him tick, while Walt deals with his family’s reactions to learning about his lung cancer.
Episode 5: Gray Matter
Commentary on episode five, in which we explore Walt’s motivations leading up to his decision to return to meth-cooking while Jesse tries to move on without Walt.
Episode 6: Crazy Handful of Nothin'
Commentary on episode six, in which Walt and Jesse start cooking together again and try to get an in with a new distributor - our next antagonist, Tuco.
Episode 7: A No-Rough-Stuff-Type-Deal
Commentary on the first season finale, in which Walt begins to fully embrace his criminality and learn in on how to work with Jesse, we explore some of the others’ relationships to the concept, and we more fully learn the threat of Tuco. That and they do a break-in in silly knitted ski masks and try to cook meth while an open house is going on, because season one is just like that.
