D/P Vs. Seeker

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl give a welcome return to one of my favorite features from FireRed and LeafGreen, the Vs. Seeker. While they unfortunately were too lazy to make a jumping-up-and-down sprite for each trainer and you can no longer see the little X over the heads of those trainers who don't want to battle, it is still good for the same thing: rebattling trainers with Pokémon of varying levels, types, and Effort Points. Simply stand somewhere close to trainers and use the VS Seeker, and if they are interested in rebattling you, they will get two exclamation marks above their heads and start spinning around on the spot, after which you can simply talk to them to rebattle their Pokémon.

Again, this section shows the trainers' final teams. They should all have been unlocked when you have caught or defeated Heatran in Stark Mountain. If you battle a trainer and the Pokémon are lower-leveled than shown here, you either need to complete the Heatran quest or simply rebattle the trainer again. (If they're higher-leveled, on the other hand, this is a mistake on my part - please contact me with the name of the trainer.) The experience for each Pokémon is given, as well as the Effort Points (shorthanded as HP for Hit Points, ATK for Attack, DEF for Defense, SPA for Special Attack, SPD for Special Defense and SPE for Speed), and the total EXP and Effort Points for each trainer is also shown. Since D/P introduced the power items (Power Weight, Power Bracer, Power Belt, Power Lens, Power Band and Power Anklet for HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed, respectively), the total effort point section for each trainer also shows how many extra Effort Points in all you will gain in the relevant stat if your Pokémon is holding a power item (in case you don't know how they work, every time your Pokémon gains any Effort Points, it will also gain four extra in the power item's particular stat).

The locations of each trainer are hopefully adequately described for you to be able to find them without a visual reference image, but if you find some particular description too confusing to follow, I'd appreciate if you contacted me.

Location: Route 217, west of Snowpoint City. Get through Acuity Lakefront to the entrance to Route 217 (no, I won't describe in detail how to get there; the general direction is down and left), go down through the grass patch, turn left through that narrow path and then down, past that spinning Black Belt. A female Skier will be skiing around there below when you come into the open area again. Continue down past her until you come to a house. A bit below the house, close to the forest edge on the left, you'll find what looks like a dark bump in the snow. It is actually Ethan hiding. Ace Trainer Blake

Location: Route 216, south of Snowpoint City. Continue down past her, past the house you'll come to, all the way down until the forest blocks your way, and then go right along the forest's edge until you can go down again. Go on downwards there until you can't get any further, and then go on to the right until you come to the narrow path that leads to Route 216. Go down that path, past the Pokémon-healing lodge (obviously where you should go to heal, rather than back to Snowpoint), and then head on to the right, past the two trainers on your way and under two bridges until you come to one trainer standing just by a patch of grass; that's Blake.

From there, go on to the right, past the Black Belt you'll find, and he'll be skiing around a little further ahead. It is best to recharge your Vs. Fisherman Alec

Location: Route 222, west of Sunyshore City. Go west from the town and just go on straight left, onto the beach, and go on all the way to the end of the beach. Alec is the leftmost Fisherman there.

Pokémon: Gyarados lv. 53 (2430 EXP, 2 ATK), Gyarados lv. 53 (2430 EXP, 2 ATK)

Tuber Jared

Location: Route 213, east of Pastoria City. From Pastoria, walk east through the grass and then get down to that beach. On the east end of the shore, there will be a narrow strip of sand you can walk across, and if you do that you'll come to another beach, where there are two Tubers playing. He's the boy, the one below who's running around. Note that if training against him, the best way to heal is simply to go up and heal in the hotel building straight above that beach, not going back to Pastoria.

Pokémon: Gastrodon lv. 52 (1960 EXP, 2 HP), Gastrodon lv. 53 (1998 EXP, 2 HP), Gastrodon lv. 51 (1923 EXP, 2 HP)

Ninja Boy Zach

Location: Route 211, east of Eterna City. Walk east from the city and into the top right corner of that big patch of grass. The little bump there in the grass is Zach, using his special ninja skills to hide. Talk to him to make him reveal himself before using the Vs. Seeker; he won't battle you while you still (in theory) don't know he's there.

Pokémon: Golbat lv. 51 (1867 EXP, 2 SPE), Crobat lv. 52 (2272 EXP, 3 SPE), Crobat lv. 53 (2316 EXP, 3 SPE)

Reward: 424P

Total EXP: 6455

Total Effort Points: 8 Speed (+12 with power item)

Ruin Maniac Larry

Location: Route 224, northeast of the Pokémon League. There is a really long way to get there through Victory Road, but I really can't be bothered to detail it; as long as you know that you go in from the League side, cross the bridge, Rock Climb down, then get up the stairs that are on the north side of the rock to the left so that you can take the bridge back to the right and finally to the cave entrance there at the far right of the room, you should be able to figure out the rest of the fairly straightforward path on your own. Oh, and the room past there is foggy. So all in all you'll need Surf, Waterfall, Rock Climb and probably Defog, as well as lots and lots of walking through a cave full of wild Pokémon to get to the route in the first place. Inaccessible trainer much? At least, once you're out in open air on Route 224, you just walk up, past the Ace Trainer, through the grass, past the Veteran where the route turns right, onto the beach, past the Black Belt running around, and then up as you enter back into foresty land. He's standing by a tree.

Pokémon: Steelix lv. 54 (2268 EXP, 2 DEF)

Reward: 2592P

Total EXP: 2268

Total Effort Points: 2 Defense (+4 with power item)

Swimmer Female Mallory

Location: Route 230, east of Fight Area. Go right from the town and Surf into the water, right and down so that you can go below the island. Once you're past it, swim all the way up to the area where the island meets the chain of rocks that mark the boundary of the route. She's swimming back and forth just up there.

Pokémon: Seel lv. 50 (1071 EXP, 1 SPD), Dewgong lv. 54 (2035 EXP, 2 SPD)

Reward: 864P

Total EXP: 3106

Total Effort Points: 3 Special Defense (+8 with power item)

Swimmer Male Wade

Location: Route 226, east of Survival Area. Go east from the settlement, head down into the grass there and then use Rock Climb on the wall. From there, go on to the right and use Rock Climb on the wall below there. Go right through the grass and use Rock Climb on the north wall to climb up. Go up there and up the stairs on the right. From here you can climb down in two places; pick the left one. Go on right through the grass from there and get down onto the beach. Surf right, passing below the island with the house on it, and go on right until you come to him waiting near the end of that path.

Pokémon: Carvanha lv. 51 (961 EXP, 1 ATK), Carvanha lv. 51 (961 EXP, 1 ATK), Sharpedo lv. 54 (2025 EXP, 2 ATK)

Inaccessible trainer much? At least, once you're out in open air on Route 224, you just walk up and he's there near the grass.

Ace Trainer Dalton

Location: Route 217, west of Snowpoint City. Get through Acuity Lakefront to the entrance to Route 217 (no, I won't describe in detail how to get there; the general direction is down and left), go down through the grass patch, turn left through that narrow path and then down, past that spinning Black Belt. A female Skier will be skiing around there below when you come into the open area again. Continue down past her, past the house you'll come to, all the way down until the forest blocks your way, and then go right along the forest's edge until you can go down again. Go on downwards there until you can't get any further, and then go on to the right until you come to the narrow path that leads to Route 216. He'll be standing by that path. Note that the best place to recharge the Vs. Seeker if you're battling him is in the actual path, since you can run there, and if you want to heal your Pokémon, you should definitely go down to the lodge on Route 216 instead of back to Snowpoint.

Pokémon: Raichu lv. 54 (1411 EXP, 3 SPE), Pelipper lv. 54 (1897 EXP, 2 DEF), Hippopotas lv. 54 (1098 EXP, 1 DEF)

Reward: 3240P

Poké Kid Danielle

Tuber Chelsea

Location: Route 213, east of Pastoria City. From Pastoria, walk east through the grass and then get down to that beach. On the east end of the shore, there will be a narrow strip of sand you can walk across, and if you do that you'll come to another beach, where there are two Tubers playing. She's the girl, the one above. Note that if training against her, the best way to heal is simply to go up and heal in the hotel building straight above that beach, not going back to Pastoria.

Skier Madison

Location: Route 217, west of Snowpoint City. Get through Acuity Lakefront to the entrance to Route 217 (no, I won't describe in detail how to get there; the general direction is down and left), go down through the grass patch, turn left through that narrow path and then down, past that spinning Black Belt. A female Skier will be skiing around there below when you come into the open area again. Continue down past her, past the house you'll come to, all the way down until the forest blocks your way, and then go right along the forest's edge until you can go down again. Do so, staying with the forest just on your left. When you've passed a few trees, the area will open up a bit more and allow you to go into a pocket of snowy land above to your left; she's the only trainer in that area. Note that the best place to recharge the Vs. Seeker if you're battling her is the narrow path towards Route 216 below, where you can actually run, although admittedly it's far enough down that most of the steps will go into the journey there and back, and if you want to heal your Pokémon, you should definitely go down to the lodge on Route 216 instead of back to Snowpoint.

Pokémon: Snover lv. 55 (1543 EXP, 1 ATK)

Go down that path, past the Pokémon-healing lodge (obviously where you should go to heal, rather than back to Snowpoint), on to the right, up the first flight of stairs and he'll be skiing around there. The best place to recharge the Vs. Seeker is actually in the stairs, since there you can run.

From there, go on to the right, past the Black Belt and two Skiers on the way, and she'll be skiing around near the right mountainside. It is technically best to recharge your Vs. Seeker close to the wall you climbed, since there you can run, but it's just about fifty steps over there anyway, so you might as well just walk around close to her where the snow isn't too deep.

Pokémon: Staraptor lv. 55 (2026 EXP, 3 ATK)

Reward: 1760P

Total EXP: 2026

Total Effort Points: 3 Attack (+4 with power item)

Go right past the Ace Trainer, through the grass and down to those stairs. Head on down, then finally left, back up and then left again as the path dictates. Finally you can go down a long flight of stairs; do so. You'll pass a house, but continue down and go right of the small patch of grass so you can go up onto a rock below. Go down the staircase in the bottom left and then head on south, taking you up another flight of stairs. Dwayne will be running around just about there.

Location: Route 212, west of Pastoria City. Walk left from Pastoria, go down past the NPC just after you enter the route, and then a little left until you come to two Cuttable trees below the road. Cut past those, go up the stairs, get on your Bicycle and go all the way up the bike-bridge, get down the stairs on the left, and then go on left past those trees until you come to a Parasol Lady. Go down past her, jump off the ledge, go a bit down past the other Parasol Lady there, and then go onto the pier on the left. Walk left, past the Fisherman there, take the lower pier where it splits, and then once you're back on dry land, go a bit up and then left again, up under the bike-bridge and then finally turn left when you get to some grass with a clear path through it. Ace Trainer Jamie

She's hiding behind a tree above the Ruin Maniac.

Pokémon: Metagross lv. 56 (2520 EXP, 3 DEF)

Reward: 3360P

Dragon Tamer Stanley

Location: Route 226, east of Survival Area. Go east from the settlement, head down into the grass there and then use Rock Climb on the wall. From there, go on to the right and use Rock Climb on the wall below there. Go right through the grass and use Rock Climb on the north wall to climb up. Go up there and up the stairs on the right. There are a male and a female trainer facing one another; he's the male, the upper one.

Ace Trainer Mikayla

Location: Route 227, on the way to Stark Mountain. Go north from the west side of Resort Area and continue up and left until you come to the sandstormy Route 228. Go up the narrow path between the mountains, turn right where it turns, and then go on up along the side of the mountain on your right until you come to two Pokémon Rangers facing one another. Go on north past them until you come to where there's a little square 'pond' and some grass; turn left there and go up through the tall grass near the left wall until you get out of the grass and into another sandy area. Go past that Ace Trainer and go on up until you come to a gatehouse on the left through which you can enter Route 226. Head up through the grass on the left to get to Route 227. Go up past the sign and go through the grass on the right. Get on your Bicycle and use the little slanted rock there to jump over the couple of rocks over to where the Ace Trainer is. Then go very carefully to the bottom of that area and jump left using the slanted rock there. Jump down the ledge at the bottom very carefully and make sure not to go over the next ledge when you turn left. Turn up when you come to the grass and go right when you come to the house. Head up those stairs and then go right. Get on your bike if you aren't already and go up the bike bridge. Go on up a bit and then turn left into the grass when you can and jump down the ledge. Go down the bike bridge there, but when you near the end make carefully sure to slow down so that you won't accidentally go over the ledge on the other side. She's standing on the right just above that ledge. Note that the best way to heal if battling her repeatedly is to go to the extra-hospitable old woman in the house close by; just jump down that infamous ledge, go down the stairs and go left to get to her house.

Go down that path, past the Pokémon-healing lodge (obviously where you should go to heal, rather than back to Snowpoint), on to the right, up the first flight of stairs, and then Rock Climb on the wall above you. From there, go on to the right, and you'll get to him where he's standing in the snow. It is best to recharge your Vs. Seeker close to the wall you climbed, since there you can run.

She's at the bottom left of the area you'll be in now. Note that the best way to heal if battling her repeatedly is to go to the extra-hospitable old woman in the house close by; just go carefully down the ledge to her right and go on left while making sure not to go over the next ledge, and then turn straight up when you get to the grass to get to her house.

Veteran Armando

At least, once you're out in open air on Route 224, you just walk up, past the Ace Trainer, through the grass, and he's there near where the path turns right.

Hiker Theodore

Location: Route 206, under Cycling Road. From Oreburgh City, go up to Route 207, up the mudslide on the right using your bike, and then on north. When you get to Route 206, you'll have two sets of stairs to go down before you get to Cycling Road; instead of going down both, only go down the first stairs and then go right, where your path will be blocked by a couple of Cuttable trees. Cut them and then continue on straight up, through the sparse grass on the way, over the bridge and through the grass on the other side, and you'll find him standing near some rocks and a tree when you're well on your way towards Wayward Cave. Yes, this is one of the least accessible Vs. Seekerable trainers in the game. Don't ask me why they decided to make his Pokémon level up out of all the trainers in the game.

Go past the Ruin Maniac's tree and then go into the grass patch on the right, up the staircase at the far end of it, and Hayden is waiting in the grass there.

Pokémon: Altaria lv. 60 (2416 EXP, 2 SPD), Altaria lv. 60 (2416 EXP, 2 SPD)

PKMN Ranger Kyler

Location: Route 228, north of Resort Area. Go north from the west side of the settlement and continue up and left until you come to the sandstormy Route 228. Go up the narrow path between the mountains, turn right where it turns, and then go on up along the side of the mountain on your right until you come to two Pokémon Rangers facing one another. He's the male on the right.

Black Belt Davon

Location: Route 228, north of Resort Area. Go north from the west side of the settlement and continue up and left until you come to the sandstormy Route 228. Go up the narrow path between the mountains, turn right where it turns, and then go on up along the side of the mountain on your right until you come to two Pokémon Rangers facing one another. Go on north past them until you come to where there's a little square 'pond' and some grass; turn left there and go up through the tall grass near the left wall until you get out of the grass and into another sandy area. Go past that Ace Trainer and a bit on up and to the right; you'll see a little lump in the sand. Surprisingly, this is not a Ninja Boy but a Black Belt, but you still need to talk to the lump before the Vs. Seeker will actually consider him a trainer.

Reward: 1952P

Total EXP: 3762

PKMN Ranger Allison

Reward: 3540P

Total EXP: 4363

Ace Trainer Saul

That's him. Note that the best way to heal if battling him repeatedly is to go to the extra-hospitable old woman in the house close by; just jump over the rocks on the bottom left on your bike, go carefully down the ledge there and go on left while making sure not to go over the next ledge, and then turn straight up when you get to the grass to get to her house.

Pokémon: Tauros lv. 62 (2802 EXP, 1 ATK, 1 SPE)

Reward: 3720P

Total EXP: 2802

Total Effort Points: 1 Attack, 1 Speed (+4 with power item)

Dragon Tamer "Oh... my... gosh..." Patrick

Location: Route 210, east of Celestic Town. Go down those stairs, on right across the bridge, past the Bird Keeper below, and then up the south stairs on the right. Go right and cross the bridge up, then take the next bridge right. Go on right past the Ace Trainer and use Rock Climb on the wall on the right, then again on the wall to the right there to get back out of the pit. You'll see him straight in front of you now. And yes, he actually does say "Oh... my... gosh..." when you beat him. Doesn't quite match the dramatic attire, does it?

Pokémon: Gabite lv. 63 (1944 EXP, 2 ATK)

Reward: 2016P

Total EXP: 1944

Total Effort Points: 2 Attack (+4 with power item)

High-Level Training Spots

Unfortunately Diamond and Pearl are a little lacking in this department. While the highest levels are higher than in FR/LG, you tend simply not to be able to get that many of them on-screen at the same time, and there is only one trainer in the entire game who has six Pokémon, and that's Fisherman Andrew the Magikarp trainer. However, there are nonetheless some fairly decent places to train high-leveled Pokémon. I don't have a lot of them listed, so if you find some, by all means contact me and tell me! To see the individual profiles of the trainers involved (along with more detailed descriptions of their locations), use your browser's search function (usually Ctrl+F) to search for the trainer's name. Remember, name only - I put these little comments in between the trainer class and the name in a few places so you'd find nothing if you searched for both! The names are all unique, so you don't have to worry about there being two different trainers with the same name.

Swimmer Male Kurt, Swimmer Female Mallory, Swimmer Female Joanna

Location: Route 230, east of Fight Area

Number of Pokémon: 5

Levels: 50-60

Total EXP: 9069

Notes: This is a fair place to train Grass and Electric Pokémon for the easy type advantage, but not much else. The required Surfing seriously detracts from its usefulness as a training spot, unless of course you don't mind being attacked by random Pelipper and Seel on the way there.

Psychic Daisy, PKMN Ranger Ashlee, Bird Keeper Audrey

Location: Route 225, just north of Fight Area

Number of Pokémon: 6

Levels: 58-60

Total EXP: 11184

Notes: Two Slowbro, Linoone, Skarmory, Farfetch'd and Swellow - in other words, a very nice place for Electric-types. It's also very nicely accessible - you just need to go straight up through three tiles of tall grass and they're the first trainers you see. It's inferior to the spot below in terms of total EXP, though.

Ace Trainer Ariana, Black Belt Davon

Location: Route 228, north of Resort Area

Number of Pokémon: 6

Levels: 58-60

Total EXP: 14541

Notes: This is THE high-level training spot, pretty much. Ariana has a Chansey, which together with Blissey gives the most experience for any Pokémon in the game, and both of them have three high-leveled Pokémon. Can't go wrong with that. The only problem is that it's a little tedious to access and heal in between.

EV Trainers

Curiously, in Diamond and Pearl there is exactly one trainer who has six Pokémon - Fisherman Andrew, the one with the six Magikarp. This means that in a twist of fate, if you are using power items, your best bet for EV training any stat except HP is battling him (for 24 total effort points in the stat you're training, or 30 if it's Speed) and then simply removing any unwanted Speed you'll get for the actual Magikarp using Tamato Berries:

Fisherman "Trademark six-Magikarp Fisherman" Andrew

Location: Route 205. Go west from Eterna City and onto the pier on the little lake. He's the second fisherman from the right.

Pokémon: Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE), Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE), Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE), Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE), Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE), Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE)

Reward: 320P

Total EXP: 252

Total Effort Points: 6 Speed (+24 with power item)

However, you may not be up for this, not like growing berries or you may just not have the power items at the moment, so I'll list the alternatives anyway.

HP

The only stat in which you'll actually never want to use Andrew. Why? Well, if you do have the power items, this girl beats him by one desired Effort Point, and doesn't give you any unwanted ones:

Cowgirl Shelley

Location: Route 209, below Solaceon Town. Just head straight down from the town towards that pit with the mudslide, and she'll be standing right above it.

Pokémon: Bidoof lv. 14 (174 EXP, 1 HP), Bidoof lv. 15 (186 EXP, 1 HP), Bidoof lv. 16 (198 EXP, 1 HP), Bidoof lv. 15 (186 EXP, 1 HP), Bidoof lv. 15 (186 EXP, 1 HP)

Reward: 240P

Total EXP: 930

Total Effort Points: 5 HP (+20 with power item)

However, if you don't have the power items or want to get some EXP at the same time, Tuber Jared is probably what you're looking for:

Reward: 204P

Total EXP: 5881

Total Effort Points: 6 HP (+12 with power item)

Then, if you don't mind giving another Pokémon a couple of Attack effort points, this girl can be nice as well:

Swimmer Female Lydia

Location: Route 226, east of Survival Area. Go east from the settlement, head down into the grass there and then use Rock Climb on the wall. From there, go on to the right and use Rock Climb on the wall below there. Go right through the grass and use Rock Climb on the north wall to climb up. Go up there and up the stairs on the right. From here you can climb down in two places; pick the left one. Go on right through the grass from there and get down onto the beach. Surf right, and she's just a few tiles into the water, next to a rock.

Pokémon: Bibarel lv. 52 (1291 EXP, 2 ATK), Azumarill lv. 52 (1704 EXP, 3 HP), Sealeo lv. 52 (1425 EXP, 2 HP)

Reward: 832P

Total EXP: 4420

Total Effort Points: 5 HP, 2 Attack (+12 with power item)

Attack

There's plenty to take from here. This is the most pure Attack you can get with power items:

Swimmer Female Jessica

Location: Route 220. Surf down from Sandgem Beach, past the island with the two Tubers, and take the left path. You will come to two female Swimmers swimming back and forth. Jessica is the upper one.

Pokémon: Goldeen lv. 28 (666 EXP, 1 ATK), Goldeen lv. 28 (666 EXP, 1 ATK), Goldeen lv. 28 (666 EXP, 1 ATK), Goldeen lv. 28 (666 EXP, 1 ATK)

Reward: 448P

Total EXP: 2664

Total Effort Points: 4 Attack (+16 with power item)

But of course, she's in water, which might discourage you. This guy gives two less points, but is more accessible and gives some nice EXP, and will work even better than her if you don't have power items:

PI Carlos

Location: Route 214, south of Veilstone City. Walk down from the city and then take the ground path, on the right side of the mountain one. Go down the left side of that path (i.e. not the grassy one) and he will be standing just as the grassy and non-grassy paths join back together.

Pokémon: Seaking lv. 56 (2040 EXP, 2 ATK), Seaking lv. 57 (2076 EXP, 2 ATK), Seaking lv. 58 (2112 EXP, 2 ATK)

Reward: 6960P

Total EXP: 6228

Total Effort Points: 6 Attack (+12 with power item)

But if you don't have power items, you also might as well use him, who has fewer Pokémon to beat for the same Effort Points:

Cyclist John

Location: Cycling Road. If you go down from Eterna City, he's the fifth trainer you meet on the way and is just above where the road splits into two.

Pokémon: Staraptor lv. 58 (2137 EXP, 3 ATK), Staraptor lv. 58 (2137 EXP, 3 ATK)

Reward: 1856P

Total EXP: 4274

Total Effort Points: 6 Attack (+8 with power item)

Defense

This is the most Defense effort you can get out of one trainer in the game without power items, along with the far-too-inaccessible Hiker Theodore:

Psychic Daisy

Location: Route 225, north of Fight Area. Just go straight north through the small patch of grass, and there will be three trainers forming a right-angled triangle; she's the one in the upper right corner.

Pokémon: Slowbro lv. 58 (2037 EXP, 2 DEF), Slowbro lv. 60 (2107 EXP, 2 DEF)

Reward: 1920P

Total EXP: 4144

Total Effort Points: 4 Defense (+8 with power item)

Is it worth it for four measly Effort Points? Not really. I recommend just going with Andrew and the power items here, or if you don't have the power items, to just train against wild Pokémon. If you have the power items but just don't like the idea of having to grow as many berries as with Andrew, this guy will also work, giving you only one unwanted Speed Effort Point for each time you battle him while giving 19 Defense ones:

Hiker Kevin

Location: Route 207, above Oreburgh City. Go up from the town, into that pit, up the mudslide on your bike, and then turn a little right. You'll be able to go down a one-tile-wide path there off the main road to the east; go down that little path and then follow it on east under the bridge and past the Youngster running around. Go up the stairs there, turn left, and above the next set of stairs, he will be standing by the bridge that you passed under earlier.

Pokémon: Geodude lv. 15 (276 EXP, 1 DEF), Geodude lv. 16 (294 EXP, 1 DEF), Zubat lv. 17 (196 EXP, 1 SPE), Geodude lv. 16 (294 EXP, 1 DEF)

Reward: 512P

Total EXP: 1060

Total Effort Points: 3 Defense, 1 Speed (+16 with power item)

But these guys will with power items give you 15 pure Defense, so that's definitely your best bet if you don't want to grow berries at all:

Collector Dominique

Location: Route 212, west of Pastoria City. Walk left from Pastoria, go down past the NPC just after you enter the route, and then a little left until you come to two Cuttable trees below the road. Cut past those, go up the stairs, get on your Bicycle and go all the way up the bike-bridge, get down the stairs on the left, and then go on left past those trees until you come to a Parasol Lady. Go down past her, jump off the ledge, go a bit down past the other Parasol Lady there, and then go onto the pier on the left. Walk left, past the Fisherman there, take the lower pier where it splits, and then once you're back on dry land, Dominique will be standing just there.

Pokémon: Geodude lv. 18 (331 EXP, 1 DEF), Geodude lv. 17 (312 EXP, 1 DEF), Geodude lv. 19 (349 EXP, 1 DEF)

Reward: 1216P

Total EXP: 992

Total Effort Points: 3 Defense (+12 with power item)

Ninja Boy Fabian

Location: Route 210, north of Solaceon Town. Ride your Bicycle up the "breeding route", that one-tile-wide straight path through the extra-tall grass north of town, and then continue through the gap where the Psyduck used to be blocking your path. Get off your bike, go into the extra-tall grass and head up. Fairly centrally in the grass patch, there is a grassless tile (although the grass blades from the tile below it are still covering most of it), and he is hiding in it. Talk to him there, and then you can use the Vs. Seeker.

Pokémon: Geodude lv. 23 (423 EXP, 1 DEF), Geodude lv. 23 (423 EXP, 1 DEF), Geodude lv. 26 (478 EXP, 1 DEF)

Reward: 208P

Total EXP: 1324

Total Effort Points: 3 Defense (+12 with power item)

Or if you want more EXP, this guy:

Collector Ivan

Location: Route 221. From Pal Park, walk straight left and he will be lurking below the path.

Pokémon: Hippopotas lv. 51 (1038 EXP, 1 DEF), Hippopotas lv. 53 (1078 EXP, 1 DEF), Hippopotas lv. 52 (1057 EXP, 1 DEF)

Reward: 3328P

Total EXP: 3173

Total Effort Points: 3 Defense (+12 with power item)

Special Attack

You have some easy choices here, even if you don't want to use Andrew. First, we have this guy:

Collector Douglas

Location: Route 214, south of Veilstone City. Walk down from the city and then take the ground path, on the right side of the mountain one. Go down the left side of that path (i.e. not the grassy one), and simply continue all the way down the route until you see a sign on your left and a chubby guy in a blue shirt near the trees close by. That's him.

Pokémon: Roselia lv. 20 (651 EXP, 2 SPA), Roselia lv. 22 (715 EXP, 2 SPA), Roselia lv. 24 (781 EXP, 2 SPA)

Reward: 1536P

Total EXP: 2147

Total Effort Points: 6 Special Attack (+12 with power item)

Fairly low-leveled, and 18 Special Attack effort points for each time you battle him. Not bad. If you're not using power items and want some EXP, you might as well use one of these two, however:

Scientist Shaun

Location: Route 212, west of Pastoria City. Walk left from Pastoria, go down past the NPC just after you enter the route, and then a little left until you come to two Cuttable trees below the road. Cut past those, go up the stairs, get on your Bicycle and go all the way up the bike-bridge, get down the stairs on the left, and then go on left a little until you come to a Scientist standing by the trees a little above you. That's him.

Pokémon: Alakazam lv. 53 (2112 EXP, 3 SPA), Alakazam lv. 53 (2112 EXP, 3 SPA)

Reward: 2544P

Total EXP: 4224

Total Effort Points: 6 Special Attack (+8 with power item)

Psychic Mitchell

Location: Route 214, south of Veilstone City. Walk down from the city and then take the ground path, on the right side of the mountain one. Go down the left side of that path (i.e. not the grassy one), go down until the paths have joined back together, past where it splits again into three paths, on downwards, right below the patch of grass with the woman beside it, and then finally down. He will be standing just on the left of that path.

Pokémon: Gengar lv. 58 (2361 EXP, 3 SPA), Alakazam lv. 58 (2311 EXP, 3 SPA)

Reward: 1856P

Total EXP: 4672

Total Effort Points: 6 Special Attack (+8 with power item)

Special Defense

Ouch. You really should use Andrew for this. The most Special Defense effort you can get without power items is this guy, who is so inaccessible that nobody in their right mind would actually use him for effort training, and even he only gives four Effort Points:

Dragon Tamer Hayden

Reward: 1920P

Total EXP: 4832

Total Effort Points: 4 Special Defense (+8 with power item)

With power items, you can get a decent 15 Special Defense effort points from this guy, but you'll have to delete some Special Attack and he's a Swimmer so you'll have to Surf to get to him:

Swimmer Male Oscar

Location: Route 223, the sea route north of Sunyshore. Surf up from the Sunyshore beach and keep by the left side of the path. He'll be floating still on the left and is the third trainer (and first male) you run across on your journey up the route so far.

Pokémon: Mantyke lv. 38 (879 EXP, 1 SPD), Remoraid lv. 40 (667 EXP, 1 SPA), Mantine lv. 42 (1512 EXP, 2 SPD)

Reward: 672P

Total EXP: 3058

Total Effort Points: 1 Special Attack, 3 Special Defense (+12 with power item)

Your next choices are these two, who will give you 11 Special Defense Effort Points with power items and three without, but they are unfortunately also Swimmers:

Swimmer Female Sophia

Location: Route 230, east of Fight Area. Go right from the town and Surf into the water, right and a little bit down. You'll come to a female and a male Swimmer facing one another. She's obviously the female.

Pokémon: Mantyke lv. 50 (1156 EXP, 1 SPD), Mantine lv. 52 (1872 EXP, 2 SPD)

Reward: 832P

Total EXP: 3028

Total Effort Points: 3 Special Defense (+8 with power item)

So yeah, Andrew or wild Pokémon are definitely the way to go. Wild Tentacool give you Special Defense, so that's not too difficult.

Speed

Andrew time.

Fisherman "Trademark six-Magikarp Fisherman" Andrew

Location: Route 205. Go west from Eterna City and onto the pier on the little lake. He's the second fisherman from the right.

Pokémon: Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE), Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE), Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE), Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE), Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE), Magikarp lv. 10 (42 EXP, 1 SPE)

Reward: 320P

Total EXP: 252

Total Effort Points: 6 Speed (+24 with power item)

Seriously, 30 Speed Effort Points in one go. 60 with Pokérus. Can't come anywhere close to that. But if you don't have the power items, he is actually not your best choice. That honour goes to Ninja Boy Zach, who incidentally also gives some very nice EXP and 20 Speed Effort Points with a Power Anklet if you like level-ups:

If your Pokémon-in-training isn't strong enough to beat him, however, Fisherman Andrew is your second-best bet even without power items, so those two are all the Speed effort you'll ever need.
