Number Game

Are you one of those Pokémon fans who would love to know the National Pokédex numbers of all the Pokémon but has never gotten around to making a conscious effort to learn them by heart? Well, here is your chance in the form of a simple game. It will show you a number or a Pokémon, allowing you to guess the corresponding Pokémon/number, track your streak and correct/total guesses since the last reset, and show you the correct answer if you get it wrong.

Instructions

The Number Game has three settings:

Range

Choose the range of Pokémon whose numbers you want to learn. The default setting is 1 to 151, i.e. the first generation of Pokémon, but you can choose any range, bigger or smaller (this game is updated with new Pokémon when new generations are released). Changing the range will reset your score.

Game mode

This setting determines how the game proceeds and effectively determines the difficulty setting. There are three modes:

  • Sequential numbers means you will get cards showing the numbers within your range, in order, and need to guess which Pokémon corresponds to that number. This is the easiest setting, as it's often easier to recall a sequence than to directly associate numbers with names, and you'll probably already know some sequences: a Pokémon will generally be followed by the subsequent members of its evolution line, and the Grass starter line is always followed by the Fire starter line which is then followed by the Water starter line. I would recommend starting with this setting and cycling through your chosen range a few times, initially guessing when you think you know the answer and skipping when you don't, then trying to guess them all in order.
  • Randomized numbers will show you cards with the numbers within your range in a randomized order, and you again need to guess which Pokémon corresponds to the number shown. If you pass on a number or get it wrong, you will continue to be asked about it again until you get it right; Pokémon you do get right won't reappear until you've gone through all the Pokémon in your range once. This is a good next step once you've gotten good at sequential mode for your chosen range, since you can't rely on the sequence anymore; it will train you to associate the numbers directly with the Pokémon.
  • Randomized Pokémon is like the "Randomized numbers" mode but in reverse: you will see cards with Pokémon within your range in a randomized order, and you need to guess the Pokémon's number. Switching to this mode is a good way to spice things up again after learning to go from the number to the name.

Your streak will be highlighted if it's as long as the range you've chosen - this is generally a pretty good indicator that you've gotten good and are ready to move on to the next mode or a new range. Note that changing the game mode will reset your score.

Guessing mode

In Guess mode, the card will show a text input where you should type in the name or number that you'd like to guess and a "Guess" button (pressing Enter after typing your guess also works). If you have absolutely no idea what the Pokémon might be, click the "Guess" button without typing anything to have the Pokémon shown to you without losing any points. (Your guess is case insensitive; you will generally have to type the Pokémon's name correctly, but Flabébé will be accepted without the accents, and for Nidoran it will accept e.g. "NidoranM", "Nidoran M", or "Nidoran male".)

In Flashcard mode, you don't get a text input; instead, you should simply mentally visualize which Pokémon corresponds to the given number. When you click the "Flip" button or press Enter, the Pokémon will be shown, and you will be able to indicate whether you got it via the Yes/No/Skip buttons on the card (the Yes button will be focused automatically, so if you press Enter again it will count as a yes answer, but if you didn't get it, you can press Tab to select the No or Skip button instead and then press Enter again). Obviously, this is based on the honor system - you're not fooling anyone but yourself if you pretend you got it when you didn't.

Which guessing mode you prefer is up to you and how you want to play (in particular, Flashcard mode may be nicer on phones or if you're prone to typos or otherwise would rather not have to type); you can freely swap modes as you go along. In either mode, if you guess correctly, you get a point; if you guess wrong, your streak is reset to zero. If you skip or make a blank guess, you won't get a point but your streak also won't be reset.

Hey me again lol

Wondering if there's a way to like make it so it will accept Flabebe without typing it with the accents?

Good catch, looks like Sirfetch'd was coded in with a curly apostrophe instead of a straight one like you'd generally type on a normal keyboard. I've fixed it now.

here_furret

love the game, but No matter how I type Sirfetch'd, I'm told it's wrong.

Would it be possible to have a sort of reverse mode where you’re shown the Pokemon and have to guess the dex number?

As in, showing the number of the Pokémon you guessed? That's a neat idea; I'll definitely consider adding that.

Wobbygong18

Is there any way this game could show how far off your guess was from the correct pokemon?

MatviBritannia

Gotta guess 'em all

Dreamor

I used this to memorize & recite pokémon in natdex order in high school, truly proving to my psych that I was Not Autistic™️.

Charlmeleon

I don't know if I have the brain capacity to memorise all of the pokedex numbers but I'm sure it'll be fine.
